Beating the "Bad Rapp" of racism in the South

This is very important.  In recent online discussions I have been twice accused of being a racist when the person arguing with me found out I live in Houston Texas.  There seems to be this bigoted stereotype that those of us in the southern United States are just a bunch of unenlightened inbred racist bastards.  It was very unsettling to me to be accused of this living as I do in one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the USA, and one which has a very good record of race relations.
So, I decided to do some research. I came up with two objective criteria for indicating a possible racial relations problem in an area: 1. Incidents of hate crime, 2. Race inspired riots.  I found something very interesting.
According to the FBI Hate crime table*  In the most recent year 2004, there were 1,397 hate crimes reported in the twelve southern states for a percentage of population of .00181.  In the rest of the country there were 6,252 incidents for a percentage of population of .00353 or almost double the rate in the southern states.

I also compiled from news sources a list of twenty one race - based riots occurring in the last forty years in the United States. (I ignored riots caused by labor unrest, anti globalization, Vietnam war etc.)
1.  Watts Riots - Los Angeles, Ca. 1965
2.&3.  Newark and Plainfield Riots - New Jersey, July 1967
4.  12th Street riot - Detroit Michigan, 1967
5.  April - Washington, DC. 1968
6.  April - Baltimore, Maryland. 1968
7.  York race riots - York, Pennsylvania July 1969
8.  August - Camden, New Jersey, 1971
9.  Fenkell Ave. - Detroit Michigan, 1975
10. May - Miami, Fla. 1980
11.  Nov. - Washington, DC. 1982
12.  Overton Riot - Miami, Fla. 1982
13.&14.  Miami and Tampa riots, Florida 1988
15.  May - Washington, DC. 1991
16.  Crown Heights - New York, Aug, 1991
17.  Rodney King Riot - Los Angeles, Ca. 1992
18.  Race riot - St. Petersburg, Fla. 1996
19.  April race riots - Cincinnati, Oh. 2001
20.  Fat Tuesday riot - Seattle, Washington. 2001
21.  Oct. - Toledo, Oh. 2005

As you can see only five of the 21 occurred in the south, and all of those in just one state, Florida!  I think its time for those who like to bash the south to now just shut up and stop throwing stones in your glass house.
