View Article  It Snowed Today in Houston

It snowed today in Houston. I know that to most of you it is “no big deal”. But to Houstonians, well we might go five or six years between snows.

As political animals we tend to get all caught up in our worries. The economy, the war, global hoaxing, The O’ssiah, and the Gotterdammercrats. But sometimes we don’t stop and take time to consider the really important things in life....   more »

View Article  College Rankings - My formula. Who did you beat?
After the fifth weekend of College football, the rankings are full of biases, silliness, and laziness.  I have a system that only takes the polls into consideration one time. The poll ranking is only used as a starting point.

The teams are ranked into eight groups, highest to lowest.  You get eight points for beating a top team and only one point for beating a team in the lowest ranking. ...   more »

This past weekend I attended the Greek Festival in downtown Houston.  MMMM! lots of good souvlaki, gyros, baklava, and other treats.  Nice Greek music and dancing.  And here are some debutants who posed for me in their Greek costumes.

View Article  Micheal Jackson? What the hell is this!?!?!
Well, Micheal Jackson, the so called King of Pop died yesterday of heart failure.  Micheal and I grew up together as I am also fifty years old and remember watching him and his family in their first ever appearance on the old Ed Sullivan show. He suffered the fate of many child stars and certainly never had a normal life.

But I was amazed, and a bit appalled at all ...   more »

View Article  Maybe we should just stop teaching the classics.
Years ago, I floated through high school and college without reading many of the classic novels of literature.  I did read Moby Dick, For Whom The Bell Tolls, Animal House, Anna Karenina, and Ivanhoe.  That is about it. For all the rest of my book reports I relied on Cliff Notes, or Comics Illustrated (an invaluable source).
Lately I decided to make up for the past and actually try ...   more »

According to Seth Godin at "Seth Godin's Blog", The Greatest Blogs are those who are leaders of a tribe. (Hat tip Newmark's Door)

Garr Reynolds doesn't try to teach everyone about Powerpoint... instead, he leads a tribe of people committed to changing the way the world communicates in meetings.

Go down the list. Hugh leads a tribe. Josh  leads a tribe. So does Mitch. And Guy, who just ...   more »

The End of an Era

From 1661 to 2008, It was a good run.

From time to time in the course of human events there exists new Ideas and new was of thinking.  These can have a profound effect upon history either for good or bad.  It is my belief that this nation, and Great Britain before it, followed a new way of thinking, which arose during the enlightenment, much ...   more »

It's that time of the year again. Here are my picks. They are not like everybody Else's.

Tim Tebow (superman?)

Number 1: USC  Hey, I hate it, but they will probably be number one. Just too much talent, and good coach.
2:  Oklahoma   -  The Sooners have underperformed last two years, but you can't write off Stoops for very long.
3:  Florida   -  I look for them to win the ...   more »

If I need to drive a Prius, and burn wood in the winter, and buy gas on odd days to achieve energy independence from the Middle East, sign me up!

Well, at least that is the opinion I spouted until last summer.   more »

About four years ago, in my mid-forties, I had an overwhelming desire to be a father.  The desire had been there for a long time, slowly gaining strength.  My wife and I had never had that as a high priority before, My wife had several medical problems and we always had a hard time with jobs and finances.

Working as I did in the oilfield, it was all up and down, several jobs I had were lost ...   more »

WOW! an actual post! yeah, it's been a while, but no one reads me anyway, so what the hell.

I often have free time in public places, shopping, waiting rooms etc.  And I find that I must blot out the constant barrage of overplayed 60's and 70's pop and rock music which is invariably bombarding me in these public places.  So I carry my cheap Ipod knock off with me everywhere I go. (Sanyo Sandisk, highly recommended)

But I get ...   more »

Black Snake Moan is one hell of a movie.  It was released early in 2007 and got very mixed reviews, either you love it or hate it.
The movie was written and directed by Craig Brewster. I have to give it a total thumbs up.
Being a moviegoer for many years I am very jaded. It is not easy to give me something new, something fresh. This is definitely different from all the other crap out there.
